The Story of Patton
Digital Ebola
1-10-2003

Long story short:

Cops screw up. Cops stop car under "probable cause". Cops treat family of 3 as criminals.
Cops neglect to secure the family dogs remaining in the vehicle. Family dog
gets out of the car, thinks its playtime, and gets blasted by cops, 1 shotgun round
to the head. The family of 3 witnessing this act while on their knees, handcuffed.

What the HELL is wrong with this country? Since when is it "procedure" to
shoot the family dog? What if that dog was a child? That child would be
dead. To a family, the family pet is often a member of the family, cared
for and loved just as a small child would be. I cannot think of a
more tramatic thing the average hard-working American family can
endure, then to lose a family member, even if that family member is
lower on the food chain. This family should take this police department
for all they are worth. Seriously. Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?
This family was tried and convicted before they even stepped out of the car,
and now their dog has paid the price for law enforcements mistake.
This is incompetence. This is a outrage. Some people might just say
that it was just a dog, but it was the FAMILY DOG! What if next time,
it isn't the family dog. What if next time, it is a small child that
doesnt comply, or refuses to comply? Are they going to pull the trigger
just as quickly?

Read these links. Watch the video. Judge for yourself? I have made up
my mind. I know law enforcement is a dangerous business, and I know
that dogs can be a very large danger, but anyone can see from this
video, that this dog was not attacking... it simply had no idea that
this stop was not a rest stop. It didn't know that the beefy men
with sticks did not want to play.

My heart goes out to this family. It has been a long time since a
story has moved me as much as this one has. I hope they pursue
this, and I hope they recover from this dreadful experience.

To the law enforcement that did this, and really to law enforcement
in general:

This is not a freaking police state. You are not above the law.
Yes, your job is dangerous, but remember: YOU CHOSE this
profession. Do not let this danger keep you from making
fair judgement calls. A person is INNOCENT until proven
guilty. Had this been my family, I do not think I would have
left your town so quietly. I would have taken the corpse of my
dead dog, and sat with it on the town hall steps, holding a
large sign that reads "I am glad you live here, because I don't."
I would camp out on your mayor's doorstep, and I would talk to
every newsperson that came to me. I would never let go of my
dead dog, because YOU are the one that caused this. To the
person that wrote your procedures: Get a clue.
I hope your state gets boycotted, and I hope some people lose
their jobs over this. That is getting off easily, because
a job may be replaced... a family member can't be.
